Where official notices are published

Current notices: property tax hearings

All three local governments have advertised 2026 tax rates above the rollback rate, the rate that would raise the same money as last year without reassessments. Georgia law calls that a tax increase and requires hearings.

The city’s notice says its rate means a 3.05% property tax increase, about $34.60 on a home with a fair market value of $500,000. The county’s notice says its rate is a 2.62% increase, about $21.60 on a $575,000 home.

Note on the county hearing time: the county’s notice of property tax increase lists the Oct. 15 hearing at 5 p.m., while the County Clerk’s Oct. 2 notice of a special called hearing on the millage rate lists 6 p.m. the same day. Check with the County Clerk before you go.

Foreclosures, probate and sheriff’s sales

Notices of foreclosure sales, estates, name changes, divorces by publication and sheriff’s sales are published in the legal organ. Search them by county on Georgia Public Notice, filtering for Fayette.

Why notices are published where they are

The city’s Legal Advertisements page cites the Georgia law, O.C.G.A. 36-80-29, that lets a city publish legal notices on its website, kept up until the advertised event is over. Many other notices must still appear in the county’s legal organ, the newspaper chosen to carry them. This page does not replace either.

What this means for you

  • To speak on your tax rate, the next hearings are Oct. 8 and Oct. 21 at City Hall, Oct. 15 for the county and Oct. 19 for the school board.
  • Read the original notice before acting on any deadline.
